HI! I move from Italy to the UK on March the first, 2017.
The canteen in Italy was a restaurant, seriously, where a whole healty meal was 1 EUR. It was a benefit from the company! In Italy we consider lunch such a precious time that we all went together at lunch at the same time and we just took the 45 minutes off. No email, no phone, no talking about work. Eating outside of these 45 minutes would be an exception, and eating at your desk was really frown upon if not completely forbidden.
Over here instead food is all over the place. You hungry? You eat! No metter the time and the location!I think it’s close to the US standards. The amount of junk food available at any time of the day is so overwhelming that when I first got here I felt like Charlie in the Chocolate factory. But going from pasta and a salad to fish and chips 5 times a week really does something to your body, including not be able to work in the afternoon for having all of your energy used for digestion.
So now I started bringing my own food, I leave the office and go outside, (most of the time in the car because of the rain!), and I only have 18 pounds I’ve gain in three months to lose. Ah!
I love how I feel when I pass up a workplace snack. Our lounge is routinely filled with tempting treats. I resorted to taking a picture with my phone of the items that I DIDN’T eat. Pretty soon I had an album full of cakes, cookies, and candy that passed up. I feels so good to look back at how strong I had been in the moment when I didn’t indulge. (The amount of food available at work is staggering!)
Since joining Weight Watchers in 2005 I’ve been able to stay away from office candy and snacks. If tempted I think of the ick factor. How many people have been touching this food and how clean where their hands? Do they always wash their hands after a visit to the restroom? (The ick factor, it works for me.)
I’ve learned through Weight Watchers that healthy eating is a lifestyle change vs. a diet. Enjoying your podcast.
For Jennifer: I’m a water junkie (always have been; no sodas, no coffees, no booze since going Whole30 last year) but those who’ve increased their water consumption, I hear La Croix is a great gateway to that. My favorite flavors are pamplemousse and coconut. They have a ton of flavors and there are lists out there ranking them, etc., but I’d say give one of those a try to see if it gets you excited about getting more water into your bod. Good luck!
I’m a little late to respond, but here’s what I did to fight the temptation of eating those dangerous, tempting treats in the breakroom at work. Five years ago I started a new job. On the Monday morning of my second week, I came upon a giant pink box filled with every kind of donut imaginable. They were for everyone and no one looked down upon you if you cut them in half or quarters so that you could create a little pupu platter of different donuts. It was amazing. And then the donuts were there again the next week and the week after that. It turned out that one of the executives brought them in every week. I fought myself each week because I wanted a donut and knew I shouldn’t eat one. Sometimes I’d be strong and not eat one. Sometimes I’d be strong until lunchtime and take half of one and sometimes I’d give in early and eat one in the morning and another half at lunch. Each time I gave in I would be angry with myself for my lack of discipline. And then when the new year arrived, I made it my resolution to eat a donut every week. And I did. Every week except one or two–usually because I was traveling. I even ate a donut on a week or two when they weren’t delivered to the office. It was amazing. I kept a new year’s resolution for a year, I ate a donut without guilt for having eaten it and after that year ended I sometimes ate a donut and sometimes didn’t but I never had to fight myself again.
