Episode 198: The Art Of Doing Extra

February 25, 2021 By Happier in Hollywood 2 Comments

Liz and Sarah discuss the art of doing extra at work. It’s not about putting in more hours willy-nilly—you’ve got to pick your moments to make an impact. In Amplify, they talk to their former assistant turned full-time TV writer, Brook Sitgraves Turner, about Pep Packs, the charity she started for people in Los Angeles County who are recovering from COVID. Then in Take Two, Liz and Sarah share how listeners followed our Episode 194 advice to “light a fire.” This week’s Hollywood Hack soothes the soul: Choose an audio book based on the reader’s voice.  Hint: Keep Sharp by Sanjay Gupta is one to try.

Love your podcast! I’m a diplomat with a side hustle as a stylist, and I have a couple of specific recommendations for your show runner wardrobes. I used to travel with Secretary of State Kerry so these are road tested for comfort in a variety of climates and during long days and professionalism.
Pants: Billion Dollar pants from Frank and Eileen, Foster pants from MM LaFleur, washable crepe ankle pants from Eileen Fisher
Tops: Rowling and Didion styles both from MM LaFleur.
Best of luck! Can’t wait to watch Fantasy Island

I completely agree that the reader’s voice can make or break an audio book.  While I normally prefer reading over listening, I’ve found it’s much more entertaining to listen to comedians’ memoirs than it is to read them because the stories are always funnier when they are delivered by a professional rather than the voice inside my head. The audio book becomes a kind of performance and it might be just the thing to cheer you up at a time when we can’t attend live performances, but we could all use a laugh. Fair warning, you may end up giggling in public if you listen during your “walk for 20 in ’20” like I do!
