Liz and Sarah give an update on their efforts to reject anxiety during development season. Then they strategize about how to stay focused on work when it feels like they’re in the middle of Armageddon. Between the wildfires and the news, it’s all too much! The advice they get from Liz’s sister, Gretchen Rubin? Turn off phone notifications and schedule time to worry. In Take Two, listeners weigh in on the subject of how to create likable characters. Liz and Sarah’s favorite take away—it’s not important that a character be likable, as long as the audience understands why she’s doing what she’s doing. This week’s Hollywood Hack comes from Liz’s recent touring: get a travel steamer. Finally, Liz and Sarah had another Hugo’s Celebrity Sighting: Mariel Hemingway.

I realize this episode aired over a month ago, but when you were talking about what makes a character likeable/accessible, the first show that came to mind for me was Schitt’$ Creek. When I first started watching it on Netflix, I wasn’t sure I was going to stick with it. The first couple of episodes made me feel like it was going to be too campy, even though I’ve been a fan of Catherine O’Hara an Eugene Levy since the late 70s. And I reeeally didn’t like the characters. What changed my mind was when there was a first inkling of growth in one of them (David) and the real friendship that started to develop between him and Stevie. As the seasons progressed and you saw all 4 of the main characters start to grow, I came to love it and it’s one of our favorite shows as a family. They still exhibit some of those same character traits I didn’t like at the beginning, but because I’ve seen growth, that makes them more likeable to me.
However, there is still one character on there that I have never been able to “like”, LOL, and that’s Roland. I think a lot of it is just because I haven’t seen any growth, although I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to him. Chris Elliott has been playing that “character” since his days on Letterman and it’s always made me squirm in my seat (I think I even physically sit back further from the TV when he comes on, LOL!).
Anyway, seeing that people can have bad traits and still be redeemable is what makes them likeable for me.
Thank you so much for your show. I listen to both HiH and HwGR and all 3 of you have brought a lot of sunshine back into my life.
